Blogging: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Blogging is amazing. It's something we in the blogosphere love with a passion and enjoy every second of, but that doesn't mean we don't have our ups and downs with it. As bloggers, we deal with a lot of stigma that we can usually ignore. We ignore it because we love what we do, but today I wanted to bring these negatives to light and share the good, the bad, and the ugly side of blogging.

The Good.

As I said previously, we love what we do. Why would we blog if we didn't enjoy it? I love the entire process of it - coming up with ideas, the photography, the writing, the promotion - everything! If you don't love it, your blog isn't likely to prosper.

My favourite part of blogging is seeing all the work I put in pay off. You might immediately think that I'm referring to the sponsored posts, the advertisements, the additional income, or the free clothes, but what I'm actually referring to is the response I get from my readers. When you put a lot of time and effort into a post, I can't tell you how amazing it feels to read people's comments and hear their opinions about it. It's great to know that people feel like they can interact with me on my blog and share their thoughts. That's definitely the best part.

Now don't get me wrong, the sponsorships are pretty incredible too. My blog by no means is the most popular blog in the world, but the fact that brands feel like I am approachable and contact me specifically is a great reminder that I'm doing my job well. It's an amazing perk of being a blogger!

The Bad.

As bloggers, we tend to put our email address out there so we can be contactable. We are a big group of PR friendly people and that's brilliant...until you are met with a bunch of misleading sponsorship deals and very persistent brands (that you've already said no to) emailing you non-stop. In my time as a blogger I have had thousands of spam emails sent to my inbox, hundreds of misleading brands getting in contact, and the rare brand that can be very persistent and somewhat aggressive when faced with rejection. Sometimes brands that are trying to sell mattresses or curtains just don't understand that my blog doesn't really cater to their audience.

I've received so many emails from brands that have asked me to write posts about them. Brilliant! Yes! I love giving small brands exposure! Then when I ask, "Can I ask what your budget is for individual bloggers?" or "Do I need to wait for anything to be sent over?", as politely as I can, they freak out! Why would they think I would write about their brand for free? Sure, if I use the brand constantly and genuinely love the products/garments then of course I'll write about them for free, but when it's a company based in California (and I live in the UK) that I've never heard of, of course I'm not going to write about them! I'm not disingenuous. I will never write about a brand I don't 100% trust whether it's for free or for money.

Companies don't always seem to understand how much work actually goes into blogging. They think all we do is turn on our laptop and write a few paragraphs a day which is completely untrue. In reality, it takes me about 5-8 hours to answer emails, plan a post, do the photography, edit the images, write it up, check it over before publishing, and promote it effectively. It's hard work and brands can often take advantage of that.

The Ugly.

The ugly side is all about the stigma we face. Although I'm not a full time blogger, I really look up to those of us that are. As someone who blogs as much as I can (but cannot commit to a set amount of part time or full time hours) I get a lot of people thinking of me negatively when I tell them I blog. I can't imagine how much of a stigma full time bloggers must face when even I occasionally struggle.

I started my blog in 2013 and the first year was difficult. I was only 15 years old and my friends constantly made fun of the blog - safe to say these girls are no longer my friends. It was difficult and kids are mean, but it was weird to later face the same stigma from adults. This may just be because they are from a different generation and don't fully understand that blogging can be a career, but when I would tell members of my family or older people I knew that I blogged, they would always look at me funny, as if to say "that's not a real job". I now study fashion marketing at an arts university so I'm surrounded by people that love what I do and even want to get involved too, so this is much less of a problem, but I still feel for the bloggers who may not necessarily think that they are accepted by certain members of society.

Another ugly side of blogging is that those of us that work hard, produce our own content and imagery, and create true and passionate posts are often lumped in with the same bloggers who don't take their blog as seriously.

I started from the bottom. I never had the money to purchase a fancy template or hire a web designer. I didn't have a camera and had to use stock images and my awful Blackberry camera originally. People now have the opportunity to create a blog that is perfection, right from the very beginning. Let me make this clear, this is not a bad thing! It's great that you are taking your blog seriously and have it looking immaculate by the first post, however, it is not ok to make your blog look incredible and then think you're going to make money and get "free stuff" from the get go. It takes time to build up an audience. Having a fancy blog and reaching out to brands will not get you that. You have to build a personality through your blog and show off who you are and what you're interested in. The bloggers that don't do this and jump right in to signing up for every possible sponsorship or advertising opportunity (even ones that don't relate to their blog) are the ones that give our community the "self-centred" stigma and a bad name.

  1. Agree with all of this, I think another thing that is really ugly about this industry is when people judge bloggers for making money and when PRs from copy and paste text into emails to you and you can tell.

  4. I loved this, it's so true! What I hate the most is that I'm so thankful to even get companies that do genuinely reach out to me for blog posts, but my friends and family think it's so simple. They see I get one free thing and tell me maybe they should start blogging to get free stuff. People think it's so easy and that it only takes an hour or so a week to create content, but it's not true. Also, I started a blog because I genuinely enjoy the process of creating content and sharing it with people, not for the free stuff, which I'm lucky I even got the chance to receive anything.
    Sorry if this is a total rant lol it just frustrates me because after I started a blog, a lot of family and friends say they want to do the same simply because they want free stuff and disregard how hard I have worked on my blog, even if it isn't that popular. Love your blog, by the way!

  14. I agree with this! I hate the stigma that comes with being blogger. We get called 'rich' and 'privileged' a lot. But my love for it overcomes the bad.

  16. Like any other industry, blogging definitely has its good and bad points. I also started from the bottom, the only thing different is that I had a DSLR, so I didn't have stock images. But I think that's the beauty of it, you see your blog grow from the ground up, and get to admire how much it improves!

I definitely agree with this post - thankfully I haven't experienced the 'ugly' side of blogging as much, but I think that's largely because I don't promote the fact that I blog much in 'real life' (I also have separate Instagam/Twitter accounts etc). I'm sorry you had crap when you were younger but your blog is amazing! :)

  18. I completely agree with all of this, and the amount of companies I've had who expect me to do things for free is unreal! A lot of companies want me to write about their products too but won't send me anything, do they really expect me to review something I've never tried?

    I started blogging in 2012 and it was only last year that my parents stopped putting it and me down, sad that it took that long but at least they support me now xx

  19. Such a truthful post. I think the stigma also comes under the bad part too - many brands think of us as free advertising & the bottom of the pile. They really don’t understand the time & effort put into blogging. A lot of brands look down on bloggers so it’s getting more & more difficult to find brands you really want to work with. But like you, said, there is a good (great!) side to it & the good really outweighs the rest! Thanks for sharing.

  20. Brilliant. I think your post really starts the conversation into the world of blogging and how a lot of people don't see the other half of it. It goes hand in hand in what social media does, which is show the good but hide the behind the scene things. As a blogger I feel like a lot of people don't understand the amount of hardwork it takes to build something out of nothing and I admire those who work so hard on their blogs to make it something that is impactful.   25. You brought up some great points! I relate so much to starting with your blog from the ground up. I cringe at my old layout and old photographs. Heck, I even cringe at some posts from last year. It definitely is a journey of growing for blogging.
