5 Ways To Be Happy When You're Feeling Low

Drawings above by Ellie Franco Williams

Even with the sun shining bright and the days becoming warmer and lovely, there are still times when we feel a bit down. It's inevitable. No matter how bright the world seems now that we have sweet sunny evenings, there will still be days where we want to close the blinds and not allow any of the light to come in. On these days we'll probably want to curl up in bed and watch Netflix all day with a pot of ice cream, and although that is the perfect cure for a bad day in some cases, for me personally I feel defeated when I'm not productive. That's why I've compiled a little list of ways to make ourselves feel a bit better on down days and hopefully these tips will help you as much as they help me!

1. Eat good food

On low days you'll probably just want to sit in bed and eat nothing but chocolate and ice cream all day - resist the urge. Don't get me wrong, it's perfectly fine to have a chocolate bar or a bit of ice cream, but make sure you're still having 3 healthy meals a day. Eating healthily will give you more energy and, for me at least, it boosts my mood. Instead of reasoning with myself that having a second packet of crisps is ok because it only technically counts as 1 packet if both packets are half empty (I'm looking at you Walkers) I tend to go for an apple instead. It makes me feel better and a lot less guilty the next day.

2. Surround yourself with good energy

Good energy can mean different things to different people. For you it might mean going somewhere nice or listening to happy music, but for me it means being around people that always make me feel better. It's nice to have people to chat to on your down days so whether you head into the living room and chat to your flatmates or ring up your mum for a little natter, talking to someone will help take your mind off the fact you're not feeling all that great.

3. Make a positive playlist

You can't listen to Two Door Cinema Club and feel sad. It's just not possible.

4. Give yourself time to relax

If you're like me, everyday you make a list of things to do, either a mental list or physical one. On a down day, strike things off the list. You shouldn't force yourself to do things that are going to make you more stressed or unhappy - it's ok to take a day for yourself every once in a while. Your mental health should always come first.

5. Go somewhere pretty

This can be anywhere from your living room to the park. When I'm feeling a bit down I love to go to places that are bright. If it's nice outside I'll go for a walk and if not I'll sit in the living room (the brightest place in the flat), look out the window and people watch. Go to your happy place and appreciate the things around you.

Have these tips helped you? Do you have any tips of your own? Let me know in the comments, I love hearing from you!

  5. I am definitely someone who suffers from the winter blues. In winter we tend to stay inside a lot and not get any sunshine which lowers our vitamin D levels. Low vitamin D is linked with depression and low mood, so getting regular sunshine when we feel down is so important.

I love all of your tips :)

  11. For me I love giving myself just genuine time to relax and do nothing (even though sometimes I find that so bloody hard). Love a good Netflix marathon of a great show as well, that always picks up my mood and takes my mind of things.
