How To Get Used To Change

 
Over the course of the past few months things have changed pretty drastically for me. I moved six hours away from home to a city I have only been to twice in my entire life, I had to make an entirely new group of friends, start a university course, and cope with only seeing my family twice/three times a year as opposed to everyday. As someone who gets used to things very quickly, I thought I would share some tips on how to adjust to new situations and get comfortable fast.


Tip 1: Allow yourself to feel emotional.

No one goes through massive changes in life without feeling at least a little bit anxious or sad. It's ok to feel this way for a while and that's absolutely fine. If you need to cry, cry, there's not point in bottling it all up. Change is hard for pretty much everyone and we all go through it, so allow yourself to feel emotions that come naturally to you when it happens.

Tip 2: Immerse yourself in your new surroundings.

Whether your change is anything from moving, to starting a new job, to becoming single - embrace it. If you've moved to a new location, discover it! Go on a walk and explore what's around you and find things to do. If you've started a new job, don't take it for granted! Talk to the people you work with, make new friends, and push yourself to work hard. Being single for the first time in a while? Learn to love it! Take time to do the things you love to do, watch the films you want to watch, eat the food you want to eat, explore the world of dating again or learn to love spending time alone! All change can be positive in some way, you have to make the most of it.

Tip 3: Don't freak out if you hate it at first.

It takes different people different amounts of time to get used to things. For me it took about a week, but for you it could take just a few days, maybe a month, or even a year. Eventually, you will be comfortable and it's important to remember that. Whether you've made the leap to make the change or it just randomly happened, do not give up. Yes, you're allowed to get upset at first and cry and call your mum and stay in bed all day, but don't you dare go back to the comfort of the way you lived before. Stay strong and keep moving forward.

Tip 4: Surround yourself with love.

Whether you have friends and family you can go and see or not, most people are only a phone call away. If it's a comfort to you, call your mum everyday, your best friend, or even FaceTime your dog. Make sure you're visiting/keeping in contact with those who love you throughout this change. They are there to support you.

Tip 5: Always remember, in time, this will be your new normal.

No matter how long it takes, this change will eventually become the norm for you. You'll become so comfortable with where you are that the idea of another change will scare you more than the last one and you'll want to keep it the way it is now forever. Keep remembering this and it will push you to stay.

  3. I can totally relate to all of these as I found it a big change back when I started uni. It definitely helped immersing myself in my new surroundings like you say. I remember on my first day in halls, as soon as my folks left after dropping me off, I went knocking on all of my flat mate's doors to introduce myself and say hello. I'll never forget one of the girls opened her door and she was crying. Little did I know at the time but she would end up becoming my best friend and remain so even after uni too. :)

  7. Such a great post. A couple of years ago I moved away from University, and it wasn't until I started second year that I was fully happy. It can take some time to adjust, you just have to realise that!xx

  8. Great tips! Honestly, the past 2 years have been a period of constant change for me. I moved twice in 2 years, and moving back again in a few months! For me, what made it all perfectly fine was having my husband go through it all with me.

Whenever changes happen I always allow myself an adjustment period, i mean sometimes with change you can be excited in the beginning but start to hate it, other times you hate it at first and start to love it. I also know in the worst of cases you learn to accept it and it becomes part of the everyday. Lovely post.

  19. I'm not the best at dealing with change so thanks for all the tips :) I think letting yourself be upset/ emotional is an important one to remember. Just cause you feel sad at first doesn't mean that things can't look up in the future!
