High End vs High Street Lipsticks

Long time no blog posting! I've been so insanely busy recently with...
  • Working 35-40 hours a week (a big step up from my usual 6-10 hours)
  • Planning for my holiday
  • Studying for my Diploma in Makeup (which I'm excited to hopefully receive in early September!)
  • Doing A-Level Summer Work
  • Being sociable with friends & family
And all the lovely stuff that comes in between! I've been finding that I only have about 1 day a week to myself and usually I have to spend that catching up with textiles coursework which I keep trying to put off! So once again, sorry for not being able to blog much, but I'm back!

For this post I wanted to really show the difference between high end and high street makeup brands, specifically for lipstick. Is there really any point in spending between £15 and £40 on a lipstick when you can buy one from Rimmel for £5.49 or is it totally worth it? Are the high end products the quality that they portray themselves to be through their pricing?

To start, I thought we could play a little game...High End or High Street? Have a guess now which 2 you think are high end lipsticks and which two are high street based on the colour and pigmentation. Leave what you think in the comments, you never know, you might be surprised!

It can be hit and miss with certain brands, of course. For example, nail polishes often differ in quality depending on their colour/texture, not necessarily on the brand. It can be the same with lipsticks as the staying power of the colour tends to determine what we think of the quality of the product. An example of this would be how often we find ourselves not going back to a certain brand because we chose one of their darker shades and were disappointed the first time. Many high street brands struggle with darker shades, like reds and plums, because they fade and can become blotchy (especially when you're eating/drinking)! However, they might have an amazing brilliant and long-lasting nude collection. It has to be said that colour really is a factor in this which is why I chose a little bit of variety, as you can see above.

So, let's start with high end brands! These two lipsticks or slightly on opposite ends of the spectrum with high end makeup brands - Mac being a slightly cheaper option compared to Chanel. I have to say that they are both absolutely amazing lipsticks...so let's study them in detail....

Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Crème Lip Colour - I'm a little bit in love with this product since I received it in the post nearly a week ago. I've been wearing it practically everyday and you can really tell that it's a high end quality product when you apply it. Not only is the packaging beautiful, but the colour itself is stunning. I purchased this in 19 Gabrielle which I believe has been discontinued in the UK as they have changed Gabrielle to different shade. I knew this was the exact one I wanted when I saw other bloggers reviews on it so, of course, I had to order it from New York! There simply was no other option! I'm so glad I did, because the product is beautiful. The colour is not too "in your face", but is more of a classy sophisticated red. It does need reapplying during the day to keep its full colour, but if you decided not to (or don't have time) it doesn't go patchy, it just fades which I love! The smell is also absolutely gorgeous! It honestly smells like a Chanel perfume in a lipstick. It's also not sticky at all and when wearing it you don't even notice it's there!

Staying Power: 7-8 hours with food/drink
My Rating: 9/10
Retail Price: £26
MAC Satin Lipstick A15 - This has been my go-to lipstick for months now and I'm still in love with it! As you can see from the pictures above, it's a very well loved and used product! It seems to go with everything because it's such a natural shade and not as dark as you might think! Although it is quite drying, the staying power is incredible, especially when paired with a Mac lip primer. Even after constant use, the colour is still just as vibrant as when it was first purchased and I would definitely purchase it again.
Staying Power: 8 hours with food/drink
My Rating: 8.5/10
Retail Price: £15.50
These are the two products I chose for the High Street section. These are quite cheap lipsticks from affordable brands so let's see how they compare...
Barry M Lip Paint 153 - This colour is beautifully vibrant and powerful. It makes your lips pop immediately to make them the most intriguing and fun part of your makeup! This product is actually the first lipstick I ever purchased and is probably about 3 years old. Why have I not thrown it away? Because there's nothing wrong with it! After a while, many lipsticks tend to get a bit grubby, they flatten, the colour fades out of them, but this product is still as good as the day I bought it. The colour is stunning and the product itself is not at all bad for it's affordable price. It's only let down is that it's not long-lasting and is extremely drying on my lips - but at least it's not sticky!
Staying Power: 4 hours with food/drink
My Rating: 6/10
Retail price: £4.49
Rimmel Kate Lipstick Shade 8 - This lovely natural lip colour is perfect to achieve that look of natural beauty and sophistication. The formula is very smooth, not drying at all, and easy to apply. It's highly pigmented and lasts a good few hours at the exact same colour it was first applied as until it starts to fade. Although it's not quite matte, it has a very glossed over look about it. Not incredibly shiny, but still has a look of a more professional application about it. Although I'm not really a big fan of nudes (as I prefer my lipstick to make more of a statement) this is the exception to my rule. I would definitely purchase this product again.
Staying Power: 5-6 hours with food/drink
My Rating: 7.5/10
Retail Price: £5.49
Just in case you haven't figured it out already, above are the swatches and their brands! As you can see, the two high end brands (Mac and Chanel) are on either side with the two high street brands (Barry M and Rimmel) in the middle. Did you guess correctly?
So now it's time to come to a conclusion. Are the high end brands worth the extra money? Should we ditch the thousands of colours from high street brands we could buy and focus on having a few good high end lipsticks or should we abandon high end products all together?
My conclusion: I personally feel that for me, high end products are the one. Yes, you have to pay a little bit extra and yes you won't have as extensive a range of colours from these brands because of their costly prices, but what you have are some amazingly good quality products. A major thing for me is confidence. A good lipstick that I know won't fade gives me that confidence. I don't know about you, but I can't stand constantly worrying about whether or not my lipstick is fading throughout the day. For that reason, I will definitely continue purchasing from high end brands. HOWEVER, this is not to say that I won't purchase ever again from a high street brand. I love high street lipsticks! I have over 50 lipsticks (yes, I did just stop and count!) from brands like Barry M, Rimmel, MUA, Makeup Revolution, Maybelline, Collection, etc. They're perfect for going out shopping or walking down to the newsagents, or other activities that may not leave you out long enough to worry whether your lipstick is fading. So overall, I think high end lipsticks are definitely worth buying, but if they're not your thing, don't worry! There are plenty of cheaper alternatives that work!
What do you all think? Do you prefer high end or high street lipsticks? Also, did you guess the swatches correctly...where you surprised? Let me know in the comments, I love to hear from you all!

  8. this was genuinely so educational. for one thing, i learned the difference between high street and high end haha. and i guessed right! i was so proud. i consider myself a bit of a lipstick enthusiast (nowhere near you though!), but, honestly, before this, i didn't think there was that much of a difference between drug store and high end lipsticks. when i run into more money, i'll have to consider making an investment(:

  9. Those are some great picks I wouldn't mind high street picks as long as they stay long.

Btw, mind following each other via gfc and bloglovin? Let me know dear :)

  11. I don't know whether I just have weird lips or something but every high end brand still faded for me, the same amount as some of the better high street brands do. For me it's not really worth splashing out so usually stick to Rimmel or MaxFactor!
