Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water Review

Over the past few months there has been an insane hype about micellar waters and after doing a bit of background research, I discovered that the Garnier Cleansing Water seems to be one of the more popular ones with beauty bloggers specifically. I hopped onto the Superdrug website and after seeing it was on sale, ordered it (with free shipping too, yay)! It arrived within the next few days and I was extremely excited to try it.

I had high expectations for this product as things that are "hyped-up" usually prove to be quite good quality. However, in my opinion, I found that this product was definitely not worth the hype.
I have to be honest and say that I was extremely disappointed with it and felt quite misled.
The water claims to remove makeup and cleanse skin without any vigorous rubbing on the skin. For me, this was completely inaccurate. I expected the product to take off my makeup just as easily as any makeup wipe, but my expectations were clearly incorrect.

I let the water flow out little by little onto a cotton pad and proceeded to wipe it over my face to remove the makeup. My eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara came off almost instantly, but my foundation was another story. One swipe took off absolutely nothing. Two swipes did the same. Eventually, I gave in and used the product to scrub my face clean. This was completely against what the product had claimed to do and ended up irritating my skin because of how much pressure I was having to put on it to rub my makeup off. The product also claims to have "No Fragrance" which I also found to be only slightly untrue. Although it didn't smell of anything specific, the amount of product I actually ended up building together to apply to my face created a strange scent that was quite intense and made my eyes water. This could have been a completely one-off experience, but the scent reminded me of weak cleaning products that you might, for example, use to clean a bathroom.

As you can see above, it took four cotton pads to remove most of my makeup and the process was very time consuming. It took about 5 to 10 minutes to remove whereas a makeup wipe only takes me about 30 seconds to a minute. The product also physically refused to remove my lipstick. The lipstick that you see on this cotton pad was only the minimal top layer, and after vigorous scrubbing, the colour was still on my lips.

After I finally believed that my makeup was all gone, I went back over my face with the Superdrug Tea Tree Facial Wipes (which I normally use to remove my makeup). As you can see, more of my foundation and lipstick still needed to be removed. This test has made me quite weary of whether I would be happy to use the micellar water on its own to remove my makeup after a long day.

Although I've been very negative about this product, there are a few positives. The packaging of the product is lovely and the way it's been made makes it easy to get the product out of the bottle and onto a cotton pad with minimal spilling. The product does also leave your skin feeling soft, which I suppose makes it a somewhat successful cleanser.

Overall, I am sad to say that I would not recommend this product. Obviously, you need to remember that this is all just my opinion - what doesn't work for me may work fine for you! Personally I found that it didn't work as well as a normal makeup removing wipe, which is also more cost effective to purchase. It was great for the overall feeling in my skin, but for someone that's always on the move and doesn't have 10 minutes to spare to take off makeup, this product isn't really ideal for me.

Let me know if any of you have tried this product! I would love to know whether if worked better for you than it did for me, or if you had a similar experience.

  1. I personally don't mind this cleanser, I usually use wipes first to remove my makeup and than I use this to remove the rest because there's always some makeup left on your face, but if I use it on its own than I 100% agree with you! but I do love the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser, I recommend ! thanks for sharing :)

    1. Yeah, I've definitely discovered that that's a much better routine for this product as well! I've never tried any of the Liz Earle cleansers but I'll have to give them a go or see if I can pick up a sample somewhere! x

  4. I was actually thinking of picking up this product some days ago but it was all out of stock but I'm glad I didn't. I hate it when cleansers don't do a complete job. I think my makeup wipes do the job very well and also without any mess. x

  8. Darn, that sucks! I have heard only positive things until now! I was going to pick some up in the store, but they didn't stock them. So I picked up a Nivea version instead (hopefully it isn't that bad.) I found the Bioderma one to be surprisingly good-- but the price, not so much!

If the Nivea turns out to be crap, I'm just going to stick to makeup wipes! and my usual cleanser.

  13. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend using makeup wipes either. I like this Micellar Water. But I use it just to remove the 1st layer of my makeup and cleanse my skin again with either an oil or a gel based cleanser. Cleansing twice is essential to make sure we remove 100% of our makeup. :) x
